Semester 4 - Spring 2020 Texas Tech University
Artist Statement
I am critiquing why certain materials are more valuable than others. As humanity continues on the path of being a throw-away culture, and the earth continues to be depleted of its natural resources, eventually we will run out of materials to make with. In the future, we could be forced to reuse what we have thrown away.
In this vein, I am ignoring materials accepted identities and using discarded items in an evidentiary way, de-familiarizing and re-contextualizing them, giving them new meaning and value. I am approaching this issue as a future artist in way an Archeologist would, or as I call it, an Arteologist.
I am re-evaluating the cultural value of trash and materiality.
Due to covid much of what I had started this semester was put on hold until next semester being that the campus was closed down.
